SEVENTEEN SHITTY MOUNTAINS AKA SHITTY SUN TUNNELS INCLUDING HERMAPHROHENGE AKA SCOTTHENGE AKA SHITTY STONEHENGE AND THE SEWER DRUIDS is a site-specific installation and photography project created in Detroit’s Eastern Market area as part of 1xRUN’s Murals in the Market 2018 festival. Assembled from dozens of discarded concrete sewer pipes and other debris found around a decades-long-vacant Detroit Water & Sewerage building, the towers and sculptures riff on the concrete and stone desert artworks of Ugo Rondinone (Seven Magic Mountains), Nancy Holt (Sun Tunnels), and Michael Heizer (City, Double- Negative). The seventeen towers that make up the works reach up to 22-feet-tall, and can weigh over fifteen tons, each of them scattered throughout the sprawling overgrown vacant lots, creating a monumental, mysterious, megalithic, future-ancient archaeo-site to be discovered, and the concrete-oculus henge of your dreams. The project was featured in Juxtapoz Magazine, the Detroit Free Press, the Metro Times, and this fancy promo video. |
