BUFFED DETROIT documents the phenomenon of unintentional abstract oops-paintings hastily created by property owners in attempts to cover-up illegal graffiti tags and avoid tickets from the city of Detroit. The series is an evolution of my Bad Graffiti documentation, which effectively transitioned into these colorful buffed graffiti swatches once Detroit’s Mayor Duggan took office and began enforcing long-lenient blight violations with hefty fines. In addition to capturing the color-theory buffing on buildings throughout the city, the series focuses on any and all paint-layering that covers up previous imagery, words, and signage, as seen in the photo series In The Strait Of The Crimson Nain.
