THE EGG AND THE MICHIGAN CENTRAL TRAIN STATION is a site-specific sculptural installation and photography project created within Detroit’s 100-year-old former train depot, vacant for over twenty years. The installation is made from thousands of stacked sheet-marble fragments that littered the 13-story structure’s upper floors—remnants of the once marble-lined corridor walls. Traditionally, the egg represents the unborn potential yet to be hatched, the new beginning, rebirth, the gestating idea, the primordial matter, creation, and the etheric aura that surrounds each human. Subtitled AKA ANDY GOLDSWORTHY DID NOT INVENT THE FUCKING CAIRN, the project is also based on the ancient symbolic meanings of stacked stones that can be found worldwide - cairns - which have been used as markers of tombs, graves, caves, or pathways, places of significance, astronomical and navigational tools, and points of mystical or religious importance for thousands of years. Built over the course of eighteen months, the project paralleled the unexpected asbestos abatement of the station. Workers cleaned out the building around me. By mid-build, I was told to stop, for fear that The Egg would collapse the floor below. Months later, the abatement crew had welded up a support structure on the floor below and painted it “Calder Red,” allowing me to complete the work and becoming accidental collaborators. Completed in November 2012, The Egg was eventually destroyed in 2014. By 2018, the station was purchased by Ford Motor Company, and the long-derelict icon began its egg-like rebirth. |
